New Phishing Scam Downloads Trojan!

Article Published By Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP

Since around July 2007 I have seen more and more of this type of Phishing scam!

Only instead of just taking you to a fake website to steal your identity/logon details.

This scam downloads a Trojan virus and other nastiness onto your PC.

Read on...

...have you noticed emails arriving in your inbox stating that you need login again to a membership website you have never heard of with some temporary login credentials?

Well this is a new ploy to get you to download some software called a trojan, and so infect your PC to all sort of nasty things.

DO NOT get caught out!  DO NOT click on the link in such emails!

The following images show me doing just this on a PC that I use to test new exploits and viruses to see what they do, do not try this at home folks!

# First of all you will notice a few emails arriving that look like membership details:

Trojan email

# Then on clicking on one of the email to take a look (remember never do this yourself) Outlook 2007 is warning me of a potential Phishing email.

Trojan Email

# So I override Outlooks Phishing protection and then open the email! The plain text email has now been turned back to an HTML email that now has a link I can click..

Trojan Email

# So I click it and am taken to a website that says it will automatically download a file onto my PC or if nothing happens after 15 seconds suggests I should click the link... After jus at few moments:

# BOOM! I am instantly infected! Fortunately my AntiSpyware/AntiVirus software intercepts the hidden downloads that just got onto my PC and put them into quarantine...

Trojan Email

# Lets go back to the download page... I "right click" the link to reveal the file that is trying to download.

Now on this occasion I am safe due to up to date software that protects me, but many folks are NOT so fortunate and have infected machines with viruses and other nasty software that is spying on them and sending back key details, such as your bank logon information, to the virus creator! ...or it could be a virus that is set to capture all your friends email addresses and send them to the virus creator or some criminal gang.

Final Words

Sadly cyber crime is on the rise as it is very profitable for the criminal gangs!

If you do NOT have any up to date security software then get some... You might like to take a look at these popular programs from PCTools. They are market leaders and I fully endorse them! I also need to mention that I get a small payment (a few dollars) if you end up purchasing these products and that helps support this website and my newsletter :-)

PC Tools AntiVirus:  Download a Free Trial Here

Spam Monitor:  Download a Free Trial Here

...these links above will download a small .exe file that when run will download the full up to date software (rather then put a link to some software that will be out of date very quickly) - they are perfectly safe!
