Turn Off Mail Notification

Published By Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP

By default Windows XP will display the number of UNREAD email messages on the Welcome Screen; beneath each account name.

(This is ONLY true for Outlook and Outlook Express)

The default setting is 3 days. This means that ALL messages not read in the last 3 days will be counted and the total displayed under the users
account name.

I personally think this is a fairly pointless feature and one that is quickly removed!

1) Open up the registry editor by typing in regedit in the Run dialogue box.

2) Navigate to:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

3) You should see a key called:

MessageExpiryDays

Double Click and change the value from 3 to 0

4) Close the registry and log off and back on again to put this change into action...

................

In some cases you may not see the MessageExpiryDays key, so you will have to manually create one.

1) Expand the branches again to:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

2) Go to Edit > New > DWORD Value, and type:

MessageExpiryDays for the name of the new value.

3) Enter the value 0

4) Now close the registry and log off and log on to apply the new settings.

Of course you could as easily make the value 6.

In which case the total number of email less that 6 days old will be displayed...

It is worth pointing out that having 2 or more accounts in Outlook can cause this tweak to fail. But give it a go and see for yourself.

IMPORTANT: This procedure contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.
