Google And Microsoft Storage!

Article Published by Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP

Imagine the ability to access files easily  no matter where you are in the world and no matter what computer you are using.

Have you ever been at a friend’s house before and really wished you could access a file, or perhaps accidentally hit that delete button when you really meant to hit cancel?

It stands to reason that the major names in technology would certainly be offering online storage solutions at some point...well two major companies have now stepped into the online storage field.

With Microsoft SkyDrive and Google Storage going head to head, who is really better? Let us take a moment to look at both services and the different features offered by them.

Microsoft SkyDrive

This is a new "Beta" service from Microsoft. It has linked this service to the same Windows Live ID that is used with Windows Messenger and many other websites. SkyDrive offers a generous 500MB’s of storage space that is accessible from any browser that is Firefox 1.5 or higher as well as on Internet Explorer 6 and higher.

This makes a great advantage since anyone can use the service regardless of whether you are a Macintosh or a Windows computer user. With the flexibility to create several folders inside a SkyDrive account you can decide whether you want to keep your folders private, or if you want to share the information with others.

The choice is entirely up to you and your needs. Even better is the fact that you can make the folders "public access" so anyone on the web can view your files if you so choose.

This is one of the most versatile online storage solutions around on the internet today. The bad news is that you are not currently able to get more space when you run out.

Google Storage

Google has decided to offer various sized online storage packages that are designed to not function as separate systems such as SkyDrive, but instead, the online storage space works with Google applications such as Gmail and Picasa the online photo gallery that Google offers.

While Google is good about allowing different sized packages, they are not so good in the standpoint that they are charging for the service, while Microsoft SkyDrive is a free service.

Prices to purchase space from Google range from 6GB at a total of $20 a year, to as much as 250GB of storage for $500 a year.

Some of the good news associated with the Google method is that the space is distributed amongst the applicable Google applications rather than only reserved for one purpose such as only Picasa and Gmail. This means that your purchased storage space is divided as needed amongst any of the applicable Google services that you use.

While some people find this feature convenient, others will not like the fact that they can not upload their own files to their online storage account.

Another downside to Google online storage is there is no real way to share files with the public if needed. While SkyDrive offers the ability to share files with other users as well as with the public, all information stored in the Google online storage is considered private unless you are using the space for Picasa for an online photo album.

This is something that severely limits the availability of options and has many people deciding that Google is coming up "short" when compared to Microsoft SkyDrive.

Final Words

While both companies offer such as the much larger storage ability with Google and the flexible access options with SkyDrive the final winner in this early round is that Microsoft ultimately comes out on top in this particular comparison.

With some stiff competition out already, it will be quite interesting to see who else pops into the online storage market in the future and what improvements both companies make to their service.
