Coming in 2008...
Article Published by Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP
Happy New Year!
As a Microsoft MVP (...just found out today Microsoft have given me the award for 2008 so that is 5 years in a row!) I thought I would take a look at what I think we will see from the Redmond based software giant, this coming year.
...just my thoughts so don't complain if I am wrong!
Microsoft in 2008:
Internet Explorer 8 / Windows Mobile 6.1 / Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 ALL sometime before the Easter holidays.
The release of: Windows Small Business Server 2008 (Codenamed - Cougar) ...a server for small business with less than 75 workstations that includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, SQL Server 2005, System Center Essentials 2007. System Center Essentials combines aspects of Operations Manager, Configuration Manager, and Windows Server Update Services.
The release of: Windows Essential Business Server 2008 (Codenamed - Centro) for medium-sized businesses. Basically the same as above but for more than 75 workstations.
The release of: Microsoft Money 2009 and Windows Live Messenger 9.0.
The release of a: BETA version for Office 14 (aka Office 2009 due in early 2009).
The release of a: Windows Vista Media Center update (Codename - Fiji).
The release of a: BETA for Windows Mobile 7 just before Christmas. (Should see this on new phones purchased in Q1 2009)
The release of: more Windows Vista Ultimate "Extra's" (...a long time coming.)
NO BETA in 2008 for Windows 7 (Codename - Vienna, and the replacement for Windows Vista due in 2010). ...but instead expect to see a BETA version for public testing in 2009.
The ZUNE 2.0 will appear in NON US Markets...(The Zune is Microsoft's version of the iPod)
Microsoft will allow Apple to use their "ActiveSync" protocol on the iPhone so that it can be used by large businesses as a corporate tool... (This will mean large companies using Microsoft software will be able to have employees use the iPhone for business email.)
Zune 2.0 features and functionality will start to appear on Windows Mobile devices. (This will mean more iPhone "like" features on Windows Mobile phones and PDA's etc.)
Microsoft will release development tools for creating FaceBook applications!
Former Adobe CEO, Bruce Chizen, will join Microsoft and run the Expression team (website/rich media design-tools). This will see Microsoft go head-to-head with Adobe Flash in a VERY BIG way!
...well these are some of the things I think we will see happen at Microsoft in 2008. I'd love to know YOUR feedback!
