  KB913446 - Vulnerability in TCP/IP Could Allow Denial of Service  
 

A security issue has been identified in Windows-based systems that could allow an attacker to cause the affected machine to stop responding to requests. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

The good news is that this will not be an issue in the next release - Windows Vista due fall of 2006

Microsoft Release A New TCP/IP Security Patch...

Microsoft have as of the 14th February 2006 issued a security patch for the current vulnerability in TCP/IP Could Allow Denial of Service - known as KB913446 or MS06-07.

This security update APPLIES TO:

• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

• Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based Systems and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with SP1 for Itanium-based Systems

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition

Note The security updates for Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition also apply to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2.

Non-Affected Software:

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

• Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME)


How Do I Get KB913446?

The good news is that you may already have it installed!

Many PC owners will have "Automatic Updates" turned on.... More info here:

If that is your situation then the patch is already installed by now. HOWEVER you can check by looking in the Add / Remove programs section.

To do this:

1) Click on the Start Menu

2) Select Control Panel from the menu

3) Now Select Add or Remove programs

4) In the new window make sure Change or Remove programs is selected on the left hand side. Now put a tick in the box at the top that says: show updates

5) This will now display all the Windows XP Security fixes and Hot fixes on your computer.

Look for the one near the end called:

     Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446)

What If I This Patch Is Failing To Install Via Automatic Windows Update?

(Update 15th February 2006 - Looks like Microsoft have now fixed this issue! - Quote from the MS Security blog: First a quick update on the MS06-007 update issue Craig mentioned earlier. This situation is now resolved and customers should be able to get the update. I want to reiterate that the problem had nothing to do with the update itself...)

When running  Automatic Windows Update some users are finding that the security patch KB913446 fails to install...

They usually get this error:

      "0x80242006 installation failure"

OR the Windows Update History shows:

 

Here's How To Install Manually:

EACH version of Windows has a Security Patch for KB913446 that you can manually download without visiting the Windows Update Website. (Please note that you should always use the main update website - this information is just for those experiencing issues installing this update using that service...)

• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 Download the update here

• Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Download the update here

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Download the update here

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based Systems and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with SP1 for Itanium-based Systems Download the update here

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition Download the update here

In each instance you will need to download the security patch, run the download and acknowledge the end users agreement.

The security patch should now install OK!
