On the 18th October 2006 Microsoft released the first major update, in a long while, to their popular Internet Explorer software...

Here are the questions and answers from a recent webinar involving the IE product team and the public.

Q: Will IE does things with Vista that it doesn't do with Windows XP?

A: we have additional functionality on Vista such as protected mode and parental controls

Q: It will be only available via Windows Update? or It will be available to download at Microsoft site?

A: IE7 will be available from the Microsoft download center as well as through Automatic updates

Q: Two features I would like to see in a future release of Internet Explorer are download management and much improved JavaScript debugging. Can you reveal if such features are being considered for future releases?

A: We have received this feedback from many of our customers and have included it for consideration in future IE releases.

Q: How can I get the best performance with IE7?

A: If you are a user then you should check the add-ons you have installed with IE as those can definitely affect performance. Check you only have the add-ons enabled that you need in the Manage add-ons dialog.

Q: Is the favicon bug fixed?

A: We've made a lot of changes to favicons trying to quash all the bugs. Without more specificity on which exact bug you're referring to I can't say whether it's fixed or not, but there are a few bug fixes coming here in the final version.

Q: Is there going to be a button for feeds like there is for the favourites on the toolbar? I just see feeds as something that will become more popular in time. Also is there a way to change the way you look at the feeds? Different styles etc?

A: This is great feedback and is something we will be looking into for future releases. Right now we do not have a way to change the look of the feeds but I will pass this suggestion on to the RSS team

Q: How do I prevent Windows Update / Microsoft Update from automatically installing IE 7 on my users system? (From the chat around the net it will be pushed out via the automatic system)

A: There is a blocker tool that allows you to block the automatic update: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/
windowsupdate/ie7blockertoolfaq.mspx

Q: Firefox provides the ability to launch the browser and open several tabs simultaneously through the command line: In the above example a new Firefox window will open with 3 tabs going to eBay, Microsoft and Google. Will IE7 have this ability?

A: IE7 has the ability to set tab groups as your homepage so the group will open when you launch IE. You will see this selection under homepage options.

Q: Can you confirm the rumours stating that IE7 will be released on the 18th of October?

A: There are a lot of questions surrounding the final release date and the rumours about when we're going to release. As we've stated on the Blog, we plan to ship before the end of the month. It will go up on the Download Center first (and will always be available there). A few weeks after release, we'll start sending IE7 out over AU as well. If you want to block the AU deployment for your company, we strongly recommend having the blocker tool in place by November 1.

Q: Will MS have apps that integrate RSS based on IE functionality?

A: Yes. The RSS platform functionality can be used by any Windows application see:http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/FeedsAPI/rss/rss_entry.asp

Q: Will MS have apps that integrate RSS based on IE functionality?

A: Yes. for instance Outlook 2007 already uses our RSS platform to expose feeds to the user in a different way. we also have gadgets on Vista that make use of our RSS platform

Q: Hello, I have one question: what is the different between the 32 and 64 BIT Internet Explorer 7 of Windows Vista?

A: The 32-bit is a 32-bit application which acts just like the IE7 on 32-bit systems. This is the default IE since most add-ons and activeX controls are only written as 32-bit applications. The 64-bit version is a true 64-bit process that is run.

Q: Any plans in the future to resume development of Internet Explorer for Apple Mac?

A: We don't currently have plans to resume development of Mac IE.

Q: Now that IE7 is nearing completion, can you give any information on how regularly you plan to release future versions of IE?

A: We definitely plan to release on a regular basis. Exactly when the next release will be is difficult to predict adn we still have plenty of planning and work to do. You can be assured that it will not be 5 years until the next release of IE though :) we are planning the next two versions now.

Q: I've seen a 'bunch' of sites that don't seem to work right with IE7. Is there a Microsoft mechanism where i can report them and you can go and help them out? Or do the sites themselves need to figure things out?

A: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9517db9c-3c0d-47fe-bd04-fad82a9aac9f&displaylang=en  Is the link

Q: As a web developer, I would just like to say a big THANK YOU for fixing the majority of issues that existed in IE6, as well as added support and fixes for various CSS properties and of course PNG transparency. Working with IE7 is now a real pleasure. :)

A: Thanks. It's been a lot of work. We know we have more work to do in the next release though.

Q: Will IE7 work with Windows 98?

A: Sorry No.

Q: will the render-engine of IE7 with XP different then on vista?

A: Trident (the name of our html rendering engine) should produce the same results on vista as it does XP

Q: Is it possible to install IE7 alongside IE6? This would help with supporting legacy application that wouldn't work with IE7 (yet), while the bugs are getting fixed...

A: Hi. Virtual PC is now free and will allow you to run different versions of Windows with different versions of IE on the same machine at the same time.

Q: Why the decision to make IE7 a critical update? Won't it make things worse if the computer is not well optimized or if the user doesn't know how to proceed?

A: We believe the additional security protections afforded by IE7 make it important enough to deploy via Automatic Update.

Q: Is there a way to make IE7 load faster?

A: See the "slow startup" section of the troubleshooting guide here: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp You'll also want to do general system cleanup like defragging the hard disk and ensuring that you haven't got a ton of unneeded processes running in the background.

Q: will be IE7 included in XP service pack 3?

A: We haven't finalized our XP SP3 plans yet. Historically, we have not included new versions of IE with Windows service packs, although we have updated new versions of IE if they are on the machine already.

Q: Is there a fix for the newly reported VML security hole?

A: Yes. A patch has been available from Windows Update for some time. the release candidate of IE7 was not vulnerable to the exploit.

Q: Firefox offers a lot of extensions to change the way Firefox looks and acts. Will this be offered in IE7 (i.e. themes and extensions)?

A: Many extensions are available for IE; see http://www.ieaddons.com and http://www.enhanceie.com IE uses the Windows system themes. Offering even more customizability is something we're looking at for future releases.

Q: what is the difference between ie7 and the version that comes with Vista? Also can you describe what that feature is/does?

A: IE7 on XP and Vista are based on the same code base and are very similar. There are a few specific differences. The biggest one is that IE7 on Vista has Protected Mode, which allows IE to run at lower than user privilege. There are a few other smaller changes on Vista: enhanced network diagnostics, integration with Vista parental controls, and we send TLS extensions on Vista.

Q: Is IE7 compatible with win 2000?

A: No. IE7 relies on APIs and features available in XP and later.

Q: Will there be any IE7 power toys?

A: Lots of add-ons at http://www.ieaddons.com

Q: How does Microsoft's Live strategy play into IE7?

A: IE7 was built to support the wide range of web sites out there today and in the future including our Live sites. We know that we need to support all popular sites equally well.

Q: Are there developer tools/tweaks that remain that will allow for Web apps to work better in IE7, than, say, Firefox or Opera?

A: For developer tools see the downloads at http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/downloads/default.aspx  the developer toolbar and Fiddler in particular help web devs troubleshoot issues.

Q: Will there ever be a feature in IE that will allow the user to set their temporary files to automatically delete after so many days like the history does?

A: Thanks for the feedback, we'll consider this for future releases.

Q: Hi. Why isn't it possible to open sites from your favourites in new tabs?

A: it is, you can either right click on the link and choose to open in a new tab or you can middle click on the link and it will open in a new tab

Q: Was IE 7 built using C++ or C#?

A: Primarily C++

Q: Can Podcasts be configured in the RSS tool to somehow be automatically downloaded and catalogued in Media Player or do I have to buy an iPOD?

A: There are some neat ways to make Podcasts work well with Media Player and IE's RSS support. It's a bit long to write up here, but keep an eye on the RSS team Blog, and we'll post about how to do it ( http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam )

Q: What do you feel about the Firefox and Opera browsers? Any plans for implementing features that they already have?

A: The IE team is well acquainted with a wide range of browser products, including those and others (e.g. Maxthon, Avant Browser). I think it's fair to say that we're all looking at each others work in addition to innovating on our own.

Q: Why can’t I see embedded (i.e. you tube) videos in my rss feeds, I hate the fact that I must open a new tab just to view it. Could we get this in finally version?

A: We block all executable code from running in feeds, which means that you can't watch videos in a feed (as you've noticed). We're looking into making some changes to allow these sorts of things to work in the next release.

Q: Why was the decision made to hide and move the standard menu-bar (“File, Edit, View, etc”) down from the first line? And, why can’t it be moved to the top of the window to be consistent with all previous Window’s utilities?

A: The decision to make the menu bar hide-able was made so that during the majority of your browsing time when your not using the menu, you have more screen real estate to show the web content. The new shortcut menus on the right hand side (Tools, Page, etc) are designed so that most users won't even need to use the menu bar at all, since the most common items are there.

Q: How do you guys feel about people saying that IE is just playing "catch up" or that you are just copying features out of Firefox and other browsers?

A: I think they're not looking at the entirety of IE7. While there are certainly parts of IE7 that other browsers already have, there are a bunch of innovative features in IE7 that no other browser has or does as well. For instance, Protected Mode for IE7 on Vista brings a new level of additional security to the industry, and our RSS platform work really opens up RSS to not just IE but all Windows applications. In general, we're all trying to solve similar issues so it's not really surprising that there are similarities between all of our implementations.

Q: Why do all item have to be marked as read, what about a check box. FEED VIEWER

A: There is a check box. It's on the right-hand side underneath the control box. Just click to remove the check-mark, and the items won't get marked as read.

Q: Will be IE7 for Windows Vista release as separate package?

A: No, IE7 for Vista will ship as part of Vista.

Q: How long do you think it will be before the Firefox people rip off your UI for their old school browser? Does it annoy you when this happens?

A: Well, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, right. :-)

Q: Thanks to the team develop IE7, at least it is only one browser that render Thai correctly--not stupid like firefox. Only one question, is the final version still keep closing itself in some certain situation like happened in previous beta and RC1?

A: Thanks for the kudos - nice to get that feedback. Please log the issue about IE7 closing unexpectedly in the connect DB. Be sure to specify the circumstances under which this happens in as much detail as possible. Currently I'm not aware of any open issue with IE7 (as opposed to any 3rd part add-ons) that would cause this behaviour.

Q: Will Fiddler continue to be available & be updated after the IE7 is released? Will we see add-on to the Dev Toolbar too? How about more HTTPS support?

A: I plan to keep Fiddler going, and the Dev Toolbar has a future as well. I'm not sure that the two will ever meet. As for HTTPS support, I'm working on it.

Q: Will you be releasing the final version of IEAK 7 along with IE 7?

A: Yes

Q: Could you post a full css-compatibility-list, so we know which css-features are supported in IE7?

A: The CSS ref docs on MSDN at http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/reference/css/default.aspx show the CSS supported in IE.

Q: Patrick many many "pop unders" circumvent the IE popup blockers in IE6 SP2, IE7 and Vista RC2 and for those you don't have a website. Ayk pop unders are a culprit for resizing IE pages behind the scenes as well.

A: First, ensure that you don't have any malware installed. Secondly, IE7 has a cool feature: put the origin of the popup in the restricted zone and JS from that domain (even if pulled in by another domain) will not run.

Q: I just joined this chat, sorry if someone asked it before. Can you tell more about your plans for IE8? Would be great.

A: There is going to be an IE8 and we are planning it now. it's too early to discuss details but your feedback will help us to focus on what is important to you. You can expect us to continue to invest in security, user experience and developer platform.

Q: From a deployment side if disabling anti-spyware applications and AV clients is unrealistic (but I can throttle down both from the consoles) what best practices would you put into place to have a successful deployment? I am looking at over 1000 workstations.

A: We recently posted about the anti-malware application issue ( http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/11/IE7-Installation-and-Anti_2D00_Malware-Applications.aspx). As noted in that post, our recommendation to disable those apps is a general recommendation to help you avoid problems, though from our tests, most anti-malware apps don't cause problems. The main thing I would suggest is to test with the applications you have currently. If you don't run into any problems with those particular applications, you will most likely be fine in your deployment.
