Internet Explorer 7 - Support Videos

Article Published By Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP

As with any software update there can be some "teething issues".

None especially so when you have so many different types of computer installations to upgrade - all at one time.

Hopefully on this page you will find a resolution!

Common Internet Explorer 7 Issues:

Scroll down this growing list to find a possible resolution to your issue, the videos will open in a new window, please make sure you have the Adobe Flash plugin installed.

NB- I am currently moving media servers and the videos may not load yet!

#1 Put The Mail Icon On The IE7 Tool Bar

Watch this video to see how you can easily place the MAIL icon back on the IE7 toolbar:

# In this video I mention the Adobe Uninstaller which can be found Here.

NB - Obviously to watch this flash video you will need to watch it on a computer that has the Adobe Flash plugin working in IE7, if not then download the following .WMV (2.5Mb) file to your computer and watch it in Windows Media Player. Simply right click with your mouse and select "Save Target As" from the menu, then chose a location on your hard drive.

Download The .WMV File Here!

(Hit the F11 keyboard key to watch FULL SCREEN)

#3 The HP Director Software Issue

IE7 causes the HP Director software problems displaying as a service on your computer. In these videos I show you how to work around this situation.

Here is the script I recommend in workaround video 1 - Here  Simply right click with your mouse and select "Save Target As" from the menu, then chose a location on your hard drive. (Please note that this script is hosted on the dedicated sever I am hosting the videos on www.hostedmediafiles.com)

The HP support page has this to say - read here - Credit to: Tzjiang and "Mom" in the microsoft.public.internetexplorer newsgroup for the script idea.

Here is the link to the software update from HP that I recommend in video 2 - please remember it is 244 Mb in size! Click Here

#4 IE7 and Screen Readers (No Video)

This is the current information I have on the various screen readers:

JAWS

There is a new update 7.10 for users of JAWS 7.1 to support IE7 - get it Here. JAWS 8 (Due November 2006) will be fully compatible with IE7.

Window-Eyes

Version 5.5 is mostly working OK but does have some issues especially with browse mode and edit boxes and NOT having the ability to announce the Phishing filter, Secure pages and the new IDN feature.

Version 6.0 will be fully compatible with IE7. There is a Beta available Here.

Zoom Text

Version 9.04 is fully compatible with IE7 and is free update for all users of Zoom Text 9.X - Read more Here.

Hal / Lunar & SuperNova

If you are using any of the screen reading software form Dolphin then please read the following support article on their website Here.

#5 FTP With IE7

There seems to be some confusion over FTP and IE7. In this video I walk you through the process.

In the video I refer to the XP Command Line training videos which can be found Here, the Smart FTP software website Here and the FTP entry on Wikipedia Here.

Watch The Video Here! (Hit the F11 keyboard key to watch FULL SCREEN)

#6 Remove The Address Bar In Popups

There are times when you may wish to remove the new security feature in IE7 that displays an address bar in pop up windows.

Watch The Video Here! (Hit the F11 keyboard key to watch FULL SCREEN)

#7 IE7 and Java Applets

Do you find that some interactive websites don't work as they should, well it could be a Java plugin error. Watch this video to discover a possible solution.

In the video I mention the Java Website plugin test - click here.

#8 The "SmartBridge" PSAPI.DLL Error Message

After installing IE7 you may get an error message that says something like:

The procedure entry point 'GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be allocated in the dynamic link library PSAPI.dll'

This is an error to do with some "broadband helper" software your ISP has installed on your computer and is easy to fix:

To work around this error:

Navigate to the installation location for SmartBridge which should be something like:

Program Files\BT Broadband Desktop Help\SmartBridge

Now find the file PSAPI.DLL and rename it to something like PSAPIOLD.DLL

Now reboot the computer.

The program will find the new PSAPI.DLL in the C:\Windows\System32 directory and function normally...

Please Note: You will need to substitute "BT Broadband Help" for the name of your own ISP

#9 Put The Menu Bar On The Top Of IE7

IE6 had the main menu bar at the top by default. In IE7 the menu bar is hidden by default, but once set to show it is placed below the the Address/Search bar. In this video I show you how to force the menu bar to the top!

In the video I refer to TWO scripts you can download:

Add the Menu Bar to the top: Click Here,

Reset the Menu Bar to the default setting: Click Here,

Simply right click with your mouse and select "Save Target As" from the menu, then chose a location on your hard drive. (Please note that these scripts are hosted on the dedicated sever I am hosting the videos on www.hostedmediafiles.com

Watch Video Here  (Hit the F11 keyboard key to watch FULL SCREEN)

I also refer to the XP Registry Guide which can be found Here.
