Like to play feature length motion
pictures on your desktop or laptop?
Whether you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista. There are times when
we all want to use our PCs to play our favourite DVDs, and the newer
BlueRay Discs, for entertainment and relaxation.
To do this you will need to install a some software on your computer. Some options are discussed below...
(If you are looking for a cheap way to play DVDs then click here.)
Install A Professional DVD Decoder:
Commercial DVD movies are encoded using a combination of MPEG-2
compressed video and audio of varying formats.
Subtitles
DVD Video may also include up to 32 subtitle or sub-picture tracks in
various languages, including those made especially for the deaf and
hearing impaired.
Chapters
DVD Video may contain chapters for easy navigation.
Extra features
A major selling point of DVD Video is that its storage capacity
allows for a wide variety of extra features in addition to the
feature film itself. This can include things like audio commentary.
BlueRay Discs
More feature length films are being distributed on Blue Ray discs
today. To benefit from the technology these discs use more advanced
video codec's such as VC-1 and MPEG-4 AVC. Both CyberLink and Corel
offer BlueRay support.
So What are the Options:
# The cheapest option is a Windows Media Player Plugin (Standard DVD support)...
# The
Corel WinDVD
decoder (Both standard DVDs and BlueRay)...
# The
CyberLink Power DVD decoder
(Both standard DVDs and BlueRay)...
The CyberLink DVD Software
PowerDVD 10 is my personal favourite as it delivers
award-winning playback quality for movies on the Windows PC -
its like having a home theatre on your desktop or laptop.
PowerDVD 10 feature highlights include:
- TrueTheater Technology, offering DVD up-scaling
to HD-like quality
- Cinema Mode for watching Blu-ray Discs via Windows Media
Center
- FancyView for browsing DVD chapters and titles stored in Movie
Collection
- High-definition home theater audio, including HDMI 1.3
compatibility and support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master
Audio formats
- Blu-ray Disc playback even on low-spec PC
