Below is a description of this Windows XP service:
DHCP Client
# Service Name:
Dhcp
# Service Description:
Registers and updates IP addresses and DNS records for this
computer. If this service is stopped, this computer will not receive
dynamic IP addresses and DNS updates. If this service is disabled,
any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
# Default Settings:
Default setting in Windows XP Professional: Automatic
Default setting in Windows XP Home: Automatic
# This Windows service logs on as:
Local System
# The default path for this Windows service is:
%systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
# This Windows service depends on the following system components:
AFD
NetBIOS over TCP/IP > TCP/IP Protocol Driver > IPSEC driver
TCP/IP Protocol Driver > IPSEC driver
# The following services have a dependency on this service:
None.
Marc Says:
Your computer gets a Dynamic IP address using DHCP - so you can
connect to the Internet. If Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is
enabled you also need the DHCP service running. DHCP is also
required for many DSL/Cable Internet connections.
The DHCP service was updated by Microsoft to reflect Windows XP SP2
changes.
If you are using static IP address or if it's a stand alone computer
with NO Internet connection you may not need this service.
