Your computer gets a Dynamic IP address using DHCP - so you can connect to the Internet. If Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is enabled you also need the DHCP service running. DHCP is also required for many DSL/Cable Internet connections.

The DHCP service was updated by Microsoft to reflect Windows XP SP2 changes.

If you are using static IP address or if it's a stand alone computer with NO Internet connection you may not need this service.
