6 Messenger MSN

Article Published By Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP

6 Messenger MSN
MSN Messenger 6 enables consumers to create their own digital personality and play in a virtual playground with friends from around the block or around the world. MSN Messenger 6 helps users create their own online identities through customized display pictures, backgrounds and emoticons. They also can share more of themselves -- silly or serious -- with IM contacts by competing at live online games, sending photos or sharing animated emoticons that breathe life into that old, sad : ).

In addition, MSN Messenger 6 lets users connect in fresh, new ways via integrated Webcam, a multitude of mobile devices or a Tablet PC, while helping block spam and protect privacy. Consumers can choose to receive a range of MSN Alerts and Microsoft .NET Alerts, including stock quotes supported by the CNBC on MSN Money online personal finance service or, if they subscribe to MSN 8, reminders from MSN Calendar.

MSN Messenger has more than 100 million active users worldwide per month in 26 languages, making it the single-most-used free instant messaging service in the world. MSN Messenger users can exchange online messages with the more than 120 million users of the MSN Hotmail® Web-based e-mail service.

  • Designing a digital self with Messenger 6. A unique range of new customization features delivers the most personal instant messaging experience available.
    • Custom emoticons. For the first time, users can create their own emoticons to show their contacts how they're feeling, using their own images to reflect their mood. It's easy to do: Users simply take their image and 6 Messenger MSN automatically shrinks it to fit the emoticon format. Messenger 6 also offers consumers a choice of 30 new emoticons, for more than 60 total emoticons.
    • Animated emoticons. New animated emoticons such as a birthday cake with flickering candles, a happy face with a blinking eye, and a sad face that scrunches its eyes and sheds tears make it even more fun for users to express their feelings and make an impression on their contacts. • Personalized backgrounds. Consumers can customize their messaging experience with their choice of background image in the conversation window. They have a wealth of options, such as cartoons, sports or destinations, or they can create their own background image from favorite photos or logos. Friends can be given the option to adopt a common background that can be saved for future use. Alternative template "skins" can be selected from a list, and all skins can be centered, tiled or stretched to fit.
    • Customized display pictures. Consumers can now select customized display pictures, such as those of their favorite pet, to represent themselves to contacts. All images in display pictures are automatically scaled to size and will be visible to all messaging contacts throughout each 6 Messenger MSN conversation.
    • Message logging. Consumers can now save their favourite IM conversations to a personal hard drive with just one click via message logging.**

  • Share and share alike with 6 Messenger MSN. New features and improvements make sharing and collaborating with friends an easier, more enjoyable, more robust experience.
    • Game playing. Consumers can play games in real time with their friends via Launch Site, a new feature that has links to fun games such as "Solitaire Showdown," "Bejeweled" and "Minesweeper Flags."
    • Image preview. Before choosing to accept an image from a friend, users can now preview the picture in their conversation window and decide if they want to proceed with the file transfer. This feature also shows the file transfer progress.
    • Improved file transfer. File sharing via 6 Messenger MSN is even faster and more robust than before for the vast majority of users logging onto Messenger 6 over different Network Address Translation (NAT) Internet technologies and is now effective through most firewalls.

  • Connecting the Way Consumers Want in a Security-Enhanced Environment

  • Webcam capabilities. Users can view live pictures of their contacts in real time during Messenger 6 conversations through integrated webcam capabilities. The webcam feature, powered by Logitech, is available to all MSN Messenger users with a webcam and is easy to find and set up through the Webcam button on the toolbar.
  • Tablet PC integration. This enables instant messages to be sent in handwritten "inked" format from Tablet PCs and read in Messenger 6 on any PC.
  • Mobile integration. Users can send and receive text messages over a cell phone or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or receive messages on an MSN Direct-enabled watch.**
  • Spam protection and privacy policy. MSN Messenger 6 enables consumers to help protect themselves from spam.
  • Strong privacy and user control. Users have control over who can see when they are online as well as who can send them instant messages. They also can see whose contact list they are on.
  • Support for Kids Passport. MSN Messenger helps users control whether or not their child can use the service by utilizing MSN Kids Passport, which supports the Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This feature is only available in the United States.
  • Parental controls with MSN 8. A child's access can be allowed, blocked or limited to sending and receiving messages from people who appear in a parent-approved contact list or address book.
  • Other features and benefits offer users enhanced options.
  • Arranging contacts into groups. Users can define and implement groups for family members, friends or even the players on their soccer team.
  • PC-to-PC calls. Users can engage in voice dialogue via their computers while sending instant messages simply by activating the Call Computer feature.
  • PC-to-phone calls. Users can place phone calls from a PC anywhere in the world to many countries for a low rate.
  • Quick access to key features. MSN Messenger provides an "I want to" area that gives users quick access to their most frequently used tasks, such as adding a contact or making a phone call.
  • MSN Hotmail integration. Along with integration of address books and contact details, users of MSN Hotmail can use their Hotmail account name to sign into MSN Messenger, and users of MSN Messenger can use MSN Hotmail to send e-mail to friends who are offline. When they receive an e-mail message from one of their contacts, they will receive notification. Along with it, they can see their contact's status in their Hotmail Inbox or on the From line of the e-mail message. Consumers can then click on the Contact icon and immediately start an instant message.
  • Integrating with MSN 8. Subscribers to MSN 8 can experience a next-generation Internet experience with Shared Browsing, which allows people to browse Web pages together in real time, see both cursors on the screen, and use MSN Messenger to chat about what they're seeing.
